During Charlotte’s travels to complete her mission of documenting all of the disabled and injured Rhode Island soldiers in Union hospitals, she was a prolific letter writer. Some of these letters are archived in the Providence Public Library’s Special Collections. During my fellowship at the library last year, I had the honor of spending time reading each transcription and admiring the original texts as beautiful objects and historic artifacts.
There is nothing quite like reading a handwritten text that is over 150 years old. For that reason, I will not go into detail on the content of the letters, but will instead encourage you to visit PPL and experience them for yourself. I will also share with you some images and a single transcription.
